About the Artist:

Ruth Taylor White had a gestural but very strong graphic style, which made her a gifted illustrator. Executed with an Art Deco flair, her illustrations were deemed “instructional as well as very charming” by magazine and book editors and reviewers of the 1920s and 30s. Ruth’s works were always extremely colorful and whimsical in tone, and her maps particularly served as an inspiration for other humorists.

In 1931, and by then regarded as a well-known illustrator, Ruth visited the Hawaiian Islands and was inspired to produce a series of decorative maps. They were issued by the Honolulu Star Bulletin and given away by the Hawaii Tourist Bureau.

However, her most famous work was published in 1935. Ruth had always been a prolific map illustrator, having produced hundreds of "cartographs" of the various states, which she published in a book entitled Our USA: A Gay Geography. In this now very scarce volume, each map shows many humorous vignettes of places and activities of the state it depicts, often in which appear what would be considered today politically incorrect depictions of African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians.

Product Description:

Dogbotz Boneyard has collected the lithographs of Our USA: A Gay Geography produced by renowned illustrator Ruth Taylor White because of the vibrant colors, strong graphic style and decorative qualities she brought to each piece. Her Art Deco sensibility merged with an honest though humorous portrayal of possible activities, important events, and significant personalities found in every state to create a historic memory of the attitudes, perceptions and beliefs of Depression-era Americans — a potent legacy in the seemingly mundane illustrative form of maps. This is folk art in its most sublime expression! And so, from our Dogbotz Boneyard Gallery of Art for your own personal collection, we present Ruth Taylor White’s Our USA: A Gay Geography - Georgia.
