Copyrighted in 1942 by Stationers’ Hall of England, this not-often-seen yet colorful family card game reflects the beloved characters of L. Frank Baum’s Oz children’s books and depicts the well-known images of the Hollywood personalities who embodied the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. This game involves taking tricks based on suit during each player’s turn. Each of the four suits has 11 cards for a grand total of 44 cards.
The beautifully colored playing cards are in excellent condition, both front and back. The four-page rule booklet has yellowed a bit and is torn mid-center. The game box, though, is in a poor and fragile condition. The box is missing its top flap, and some of the side panels are worn, split and/or curling. One upper corner has remnants of cellophane tape. Please view the accompanying photographs to note condition issues.
Despite the exterior box’s condition, the Wizard of Oz Card Game offers hours of great family entertainment as well as nostalgia for one of the most internationally known children’s books and films. For those who of collectors of all things Oz, this vintage card game would be a wonderful addition.
