About the Artist:
Ferdinand Piatnik & Söhne, A.G., is a Viennese playing card company started in 1824 by Anton Moser. Ferdinand Piatnik took over in 1843, marrying Moser’s widow a few years later. Piatnik’s three sons joined the ranks in 1882, adding their names to their father’s company name. Ferdinand died in 1885, leaving the successful business to his sons and his widow. By the turn of the 19th century, Ferdinand Piatnik & Söhne began to expand, purchasing a sister company known as Ritter & Cie (in Prague, Poland). Piatnik & Söhne is still in business today.
For the past 40 years, Piatnik has also produced games. The Activity Game first published in 1990, has been a best-selling game in Austria and has been translated into five languages. The Piatnik Group markets and sells through its own subsidiaries in Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the United States of America and other countries through a network of exclusive distributors.
Designed and manufactured by Ferdinand Piatnik & Söhne in the early 1950s and then distributed throughout Europe by Benno Products of London, the Black Peter with Animals card game is Austria’s version of Old Maid. This card game is geared toward younger children to learn the skill of matching similar items.
This card game is beautifully illustrated with the images of different animals that would be readily known to children. The outer game box and inner sleeve that holds the game cards are in excellent vintage condition. On the back side of the exterior box is the inscription “4/4” that has been written in pencil. What’s most fun about the box and card sleeve is that when properly aligned, one notes that Black Peter’s tail extends all the way down the two components, creating a playful image for children.
The 31 game cards are also in a great condition. Their illustrations remain bright with wonderful colorings. The instruction sheet, however, is a bit wrinkled from usage.
This delightful children’s card game from Vienna, Austria, offers many hours of great family fun. This game would make for a playful birthday or holiday gift for a child. For those who collect card games, children’s products, or games from Europe, Black Peter with Animals is a wonderful find.
