About the Artist:
Native Chicagoan Robert St. John had a long interest in Israel and the Middle East. His books about this region and topic include Ben-Gurion, Shalom Means Peace, Tongue of the Prophets, and Roll Jordan Roll. The author first came to national attention with his coverage of World War II in the Balkans, and with his book From the Land of Silent People.
St. John is also famous as a lecturer and radio commentator. In press and radio, he reported the birth of Israel and the Middle East belligerencies of 1948, 1956 and 1967.
An eloquent non-Jewish spokesman for Jewish causes, St. John maintained close ties with the Jewish state and was honored by Jewish and Israeli institutions. When doing research for this book, Eban, he interviewed hundreds of Abba Eban’s friends, colleagues and critics on three continents and uncovered a set of early Eban letters, which throw light on a side of his character the public has never seen. And, St. John had the full cooperation of Eban himself.
Product Description:
This 1972 biography by Robert St. John examines the life of Abba Eban, an Israeli diplomat and politician, and a scholar of the Arabic and Hebrew languages. Throughout his career, Eban held the positions of Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister, Education Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and ambassador to the United States of America and to the United Nations. Eban also served as Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly and President of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
This autographed copy of Eban is a hardbound edition. The book has been signed by the author himself with the inscription “To Irene Lohn. Shalom!” The biography, with index, is 542 pages. While the hardbound cover and internal text and photo pages are in great vintage condition with only minimal yellowing of the paper, the outer slip cover of the book is torn, creased and tattered in many places.
For books collectors of biographies, nonfiction works about Israel and the Middle East, or of autographed books, this signed copy of a well-regarded biography would make for an excellent addition to such a collection.
