Produced in 1947 by Ed-U Cards, Inc., the ABC Educational Cards can help parents and teachers to “devise scores of exciting games that teach youngsters to spell and count without seeming to teach at all,” as indicated on the backside of the game box. In fact, the instruction sheet provides three different games that can be played using these cards.
The card deck of the ABC Educational Cards comprises 36 playing cards divided into 31 alphabet cards (some of the letters appear more than once) and five number cards from 1 to 5. The cards depict a variety of well-known images that are easily recognizable by children. On the back of each card is a large-print letter or number of the illustration depicted on the card’s front. The cards are in good vintage condition, free of tears, creases, and frayed edges. Though the graphics of the cards remain bright, the card stock itself has some minor discoloration due to age.
While the instruction sheet is in good condition, the game box has some minor condition issues. The box has some tears, frayed corners and residual tape marks, but it remains solid enough to hold the playing cards. Accompanying photographs depict these condition problems.
Ed-U’s ABC Educational Cards offer great family entertainment. This card game would also be ideal for young children just learning to read and count as well as elementary school reading teachers. For collectors of children’s games and toys, this simple card game makes for a wonderful addition to such a collection
