This late 1940s circular scarf clip is composed of mother of pearl and gold-tone metal. The mother of pearl lies in the center of the clip with metal scrollwork around it and highly detailed filigree millwork over it. The ornate quality attests to the superb craftsmanship of the designer.
On the back of the clip appears “W. Germany.” Please note that a marking of “Germany” indicates that a piece was made before World War II. In 1946, when Germany was split into two separate nations, items made in either West or East Germany were marked “West Germany” or “German Democratic Republic” (the Soviet designation for East Germany, which was neither democratic nor a republic). This piece dates to 1948.
The scarf clip is in excellent vintage condition. The clip on the backside works well and will hold a scarf snugly.
Not only would this eye-catching scarf clip be of great value to any costume jewelry collection but also it is collectible for history buffs who seek vintage pieces that were signed post-World War II and pre-German unification.
