The Cincinnati Game Company created the subsidiary Fireside Game Company to produce a series of educational card games. The illustrated New Testament Game, published in 1899, was one of these educational pursuits, and each card of the deck features a brief synopsis of one area of the life of Jesus Christ. The 52 card deck consists of 13 “books” of four cards, and the objective of each player is to complete the greatest numbers of “books” to win the game.
The card game is in good antique condition for a product more than 115 years old. The blue box top of the card game has some ragged corners and edges as well as a spilt on each side panel where one would grip the box top to separate it from the box bottom. The bottom of the box is in better condition, though it does have one medium-size gouge in a side panel. The instruction card has been glued to the inside of the box top; it remains in excellent shape. The game cards are like new, free of frayed edges, tears, creases and even discoloration. The duotone illustrations are clear and crisp as is the four-color white lily artwork on the back of each card. Please review the accompanying photographs to note condition issues.
Though an antique, the New Testament Game still offers great family entertainment, especially in the arena of Christian spirituality. This game would make for a wonderful gift for a child for any special occasion, and it would serve as a thoughtful gift for any Sunday School teacher or instructor of Christian education. Finally, for those who collect vintage children’s game and toys or who enjoy Christian games, this card game is an ideal find!
