This children’s card game based on the television cartoon characters known as “Alvin and The Chipmunks” was manufactured and distributed in 1965 by Ed-U-Cards of New York. The vintage card game plays as a rummy-style game. Two instruction cards accompany the deck.
Alvin and the Chipmunks, originally “David Seville and the Chipmunks,” or simply “The Chipmunks, is an American animated music group created by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr., for a novelty record in 1958. The group consists of three singing animated anthropomorphic chipmunks: Alvin, the mischievous troublemaker, who quickly became the star of the group; Simon, the tall, bespectacled intellectual; and Theodore, the chubby, impressionable one. The trio is managed by their human adoptive father, David (Dave) Seville. In reality, “David Seville” was Bagdasarian’s stage name, and the Chipmunks themselves are named after the executives of their original record label. The characters became a success, and the singing Chipmunks and their manager were given life in several animated cartoon productions, beginning in the late 1950s, using redrawn, anthropomorphic chipmunks, and eventually films.
The 1963 Ed-U “The Chipmunks” Card Game is in great vintage condition. The game box (both front and back) have a very colorful and vibrant cartoon image of all three chipmunks. The box top shows some signs of ware, not unusual for a game more than 60 years of age. The card deck includes two instruction cards, two Joker cards, and 32 rummy cards. The cards are in a fine condition; only one card has some slight bends.
