This unusual American-made pipe featuring the head of a bat as the pipe’s bowl was made in the mid-1980s and acquired in, of all places, Berlin, Germany. The stem of the pipe is standard fare, though the mouthpiece has a small piece missing, but which, in no way, hinders the functionality of the pipe. However, it’s the pipe’s bowl that sports a quite unique image: the head of a bat carved from wood. From gaping mouth to ears drawn back, the bat-head bowl presents a fascinating look. In addition, golden plastic eyes give the bat a fierce and scary look.
Other than the slight damage to the mouthpiece, this pipe is in good vintage condition. The carved bat’s head is wonderfully detailed and free of flaws, except where flame touched the top part of the bowl during smoking. Under the left ear of the bat and extending to its neck is the mark “Genuine Op Art.”
This would make an atypical piece for one’s office, den or man cave. For collectors of pipes and other smoking implements, this fierce-looking bat pipe would be a fun addition to such a collection.
