This antique copy of the French card/gambling game Le Jeu de Nain Jaune (Game of the Yellow Dwarf) was produced during the 1870s, making the game more than 140 years old. Le Jeu de Nain Jaune is an attractive and unique traditional French card game that strikes a satisfying balance between luck of the draw and genuine strategy.
This antique set comprises five unique cardboard-and-cloth trays inlaid with the special scoring cards (King of Hearts, Queen of Spades, Jack of Clubs, 10 of Diamonds, and the greatest scoring Nain Jaune, or the 7 of Diamonds). The trays are held in a larger tray that displays the same scoring card images as those of the smaller trays. In addition, a lower tray holds four cardboard-and-cloth token containers and a larger bank tray. Within the bank tray are the three types of tokens (i.e., poker chips) used to score the game.
The objective of Le Jeu de Nain Jaune is to dispose of the cards in your hand, playing them in simple numerical sequence from 1 (Ace) to King, picking up bonuses along the way. The suits have no significance other than when playing the five special cards. The person playing the King terminates the sequence and may restart it with a card of her/his choice. This is where the strategy comes into play. Remembering which cards have been played allows you to frustrate your opponents by starting a sequence favoring the cards remaining in your hand. The simplicity of the basic game appeals to younger gamers, whereas the hardened gambler and her/his gaming friends can enjoy the hunt for the 7 of Diamonds tray full of tokens.
This copy of Le Jeu de Nain Jaune is in good vintage condition for a game dating back to the 1870s. The Queen of Spades card tray has a broken edge. In addition, the trays are marked in ink with letters or numbers. The bank tray has been marked in ink with the word “Bank” and the tokens have values written on them. The remaining components are in great condition. Please review all accompanying photos for condition issues. Weight of the boxed game is 2 lbs., 10.0 oz.
Please note that the game does not include a deck of cards, but any standard deck of 52 cards can be used.
This fast-paced card game would make an ideal gift for an evening of fun family entertainment, a great teaching tool for an instructor of the French language and its culture, or an unexpectedly delightful find for a collector of vintage board games.
