About the Artist:
Whiting & Davis is one of the oldest costume jewelers in the United Sates according to the text Costume Jewelry: A Practical Handbook & Value Guide. The firm started as a chain company owned in 1876 by William Wade and Edward P. Davis. In 1907, C.W. Whiting became a partner, then full owner. Whiting and Davis are known as silversmiths and also for their invention of a machine that could produce fabulous mesh bags. Throughout the 20th century, the company produced costume jewelry; the most popular, besides the mesh necklaces, were their huge bangles and fabulous cameos, reproduced from antique styles. Early marks for chains include “W.C. Co.,” for Whiting Chain Company, and “W. & D.” On most of their costume jewelry, the name “WHITING DAVIS” appears in a cartouche.
