(+$11.35 shipping & handling)This repurposed tin sign advertises Picaninny Freeze for just five cents from Hendlers Creamery Company, “the velvet kind.” Hendlers Creamery was one of Baltimore Maryland’s most famous ice cream brands from 1907 until its demise in the 1960s. According to this sign, Picaninny Freeze is “a pal for your palate.”
This tin sign is a beautifully rendered reproduction from the early 1920s. The sign is in good vintage condition, though it does have some minor dirty spots and a mark from a previous price tag — all of which could be easily cleaned. The colorful graphics overlaid on a dark green background and an amber sun make the image of the young African American child with her watermelon visually pop. The sign has a hole in each of its four corners for easy hanging.
The sign makes for a fun item for any advertising or Black Americana collection.
