Description

This beautiful vintage burgundy Bakelite and rosewood stretch bracelet was acquired at an estate sale in a northwest suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The Bakelite used in this unusual piece of jewelry is a marbleized burgundy color. The Bakelite shows a positive result when undergoing the Simichrome test. An original sticker on one side of the bangle notes that the rosewood used in its construction is genuine.

For those unfamiliar with Bakelite, it is one of the first plastics made from synthetic components. Bakelite was used for its electrical nonconductivity and heat-resistant properties in electrical insulators, radio and telephone casings, and such diverse products as kitchenware, jewelry, pipe stems, and children's toys. In 1993, Bakelite was designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society in recognition of its significance as the world's first synthetic plastic. The "retro" appeal of old Bakelite products and labor-intensive manufacturing have made them collectible in recent years.

For something fun and funky to wear with any outfit, this unique bracelet is just the thing. So, add it to your costume jewelry collection today!
