(+$9.25 shipping & handling)This unusual, round trinket box made of celluloid was produced in Hong Kong during the early 1970s. Atop the trinket box appears a beautifully designed and hand-painted duck. The words “pintail duck” appear on one side of the trinket box bottom.
For those of you not familiar with Celluloid, the plastic dates back to the beginning of the 20th century to the 1930s. Celluloid is one of the earliest man-made plastics widely used in costume jewelry. Celluloid has certain characteristics that differentiate it from other plastics. In general, pieces made from Celluloid tend to be thin, light, somewhat brittle, sensitive to heat (they crack and craze), and early Celluloid can be extremely flammable (do not ever test with a hot pin!). When placed briefly in hot water, early Celluloid smells like camphor, while later cellulose acetate smells like vinegar.
This celluloid trinket box is in great vintage condition, with only very minor marks or scratches. A tiny nick does appear on rim on one side of the box bottom. The words “Made in Hong Kong” have also been embossed on the box bottom.
This wonderfully crafted pintail duck trinket box would make for a fun statement on the top of any bedroom dresser or vanity set, especially for a country-style home or a getaway cabin. If you collect celluloid products, then this vintage trinket box would be a delightful addition.
