Description

Though some folks object to the killing of animals, those of us who are Native American understand that one of the perennial mysteries of the great Circle of Life is that “life takes life in order to survive,” be it for food, clothing or protection. The life and spirit of the large turtle that gifted this beautiful shell was honored with gifts of tobacco as part of Ojibwa tradition. Its shell was then cleared of any flesh by burying it in the dirt so beetles and other insects could eat the dead flesh.

Weeks later the turtle shell was removed from the ground, thoroughly cleaned by hand, polished and had holes drilled in the bottom third of the shell so that it could be used for the creation of a sacred medicine pouch or other ceremonial object. This gorgeous large turtle carapace would make a wonderful gift for a designer of traditional Native American artifacts or for an artist working within the sacredness of those traditions. It could also be used as a decorative piece in your living room, library, or office.
